Indivisible Montgomery’s May 20th member meeting featured Bill Schauman and Ogechi Akalegbere, from Action in Montgomery (AIM), a broad-based community power organization, rooted in the county’s congregation, public schools, and neighborhood civic associations. Since 1998, AIM has worked to build political power for progressive change in the County. While AIM seeks to influence political leaders, it does so in a non-partisan manner, from neither a Democratic or Republican agenda. AIM is a 501(c )(3) organization.
AIM’s victories have been significant and below are just a few highlights:
- Secured over $700 M from the county for affordable housing through the Housing Initiative Fund
- Played a major role in passing and defending the Maryland DREAM Act
- Lobbied successfully to introduce the Excel Beyond The Bell program into 14 elementary schools attended by students receiving free and reduced lunches
- Lobbied successfully for the total refurbishment of South Lake ES in Gaithersburg
Bill and Ogechi extended a welcome to IM members who would be interested in attending one of their actions – and also urged any IM members who attend congregations or live near a Title 1 school who might benefit from membership in AIM to reach out.
