What is a GIVING CIRCLE?

Ever since that fateful election night in November 2016 and the onset of the blinking red warning sign in my political consciousness, it has been a continuing challenge to manage the rise and fall of emotions in reaction to the events of the daily news cycle. We all face this problem although we may be triggered by different stories. Whether it is listening to a Texas woman forced against her will to carry a non-viable fetus to the emergency end of her pregnancy, seeing the latest video showing brutal police misconduct, or hearing about a library that is removing books – the fire alarm in our minds goes off, demanding that we do something.  Unfortunately, the needed fixes occur largely as a result of long term politics at the state or local government level and cannot happen overnight. How effective can one person be unless one is living in one of these states?

Becoming part of an Indivisible Montgomery Giving Circle is a way to participate in reform of state level long term politics even though we are far away.  A Giving Circle is a group of friends and/or members of an organization that donates to the States Project (https://statesproject.org/). Since its founding, the States Projects has been working to change politics by building progressive majorities in state legislatures and courts. They concentrate on working in carefully selected districts in swing states, using evidence-based political techniques and reaching goals by achieving measurable milestones. A recent report shows the powerful impact the States Project has had in recent years in:  Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona! (https://statesproject.org/2022-stories-of-impact/).

The next time you hear a  depressing story in the news, wouldn’t you like to feel the calm assurance that you are part of the rescue team? Members of Indivisible Montgomery are organizing a Giving Circle.  Email the Steering Committee (indivisiblemontgomery@gmail.com) soon so you can join us to learn what’s involved.
